Our History & Concept

MEERA Sansthan is a registered nonprofit, non-political, non-government organization headquartered in western Rajasthan. Since its inception in 1976 the organization has been working in 6 districts of western Rajasthan with primary focus on up-liftment of women and it nonetheless tries to promote gender justice in all its activities.

Sustainable development of human society is only possible through Gandhian ideological approach. Inequality is not preordained. Marginalization is not pre-destined. Human beings can change the anomaly it only if they have the knowledge and the willingness to do it. A Public and Political commitment towards this has been the founding ground of MEERA Sansthan.

Demographic Status of Field Area

The condition of women in the operational area of MEERA Sansthan happens to be quite pathetic. They are socially, economically, morally and psychologically a destitute lot. The condition worsens due to drought conditions existing in the area. The recurring drought & the scaling of rainfall much below the average level has led to disappearance of three life sustaining resources - food, fodder, and water.

The drought conditions have left a deep impact on lives of the women and there are no alternatives to rise above these conditions because of high illiteracy, ill health, low incomes, high population and also existing social taboos.

MEERA Sansthan, which is a missionary effort of social worker, Mrs. Chhagan Behan Golechha (First Mahila Sarpanch of Rajasthan) is vigorous with all its efforts to come with all support to the women & children especially of the rural areas of western Rajasthan.

Mission

A society that sustains on the equality of men and women, equitable distribution of resources, inclusive governance, respect to nature, rational thinking and mutual respect for each other is the cherished society of MEERA Sansthan.

Forming Peoples' Collectives

Organizing the unorganized and forming people's institutions, organizations, and non-formal groups with marginalized people, mostly women and vulnerable men.

Awareness & Info Dissemination

Awareness meetings and camps on social issues and government welfare schemes to strengthen community collectives.

Legal Aid & Services

Legal education and services provided against atrocities, domestic violence, dowry, and any form of harassment to women.

Capacity Building

Training of community members, leaders, government employees along with exposure visits and workshops.

Advocacy & Lobbying

Trying to bring about pro-poor policies and structural changes for equitable entitlements.

Networking

Working in close coordination with like-minded organizations to form a collective force for alleviation of poverty and injustices.

Governance

MEERA Sansthan does not believe in hierarchy but for effective functioning of the organization, has a structured team. At the crux of the programme are the community animators, mostly locals belonging to the same community, who drive the programme at the village level. To guide them in their endeavors are the supervisors at the cluster levels who are further facilitated by the programme coordinators.

The overall direction of the programme is set by the senior management team which finally reports to the governing body. In addition to the social animators and management staff the organization also has professionals such as Physicians, Pediatricians, Civil engineers, Microbiologists, Sociologists, environmental experts etc.

The governing body meets quarterly to review the working and progress of the organization. The yearly income and expenditure of the organization is audited by an external Chartered accountant as well as by the donors and is published in the annual report.

Challenges

Working in a developing society with a history of hundreds of years of colonization and subjugation brings in diverse myths and stereotypes where women are treated like pawns of the chessboard.

Removing these myths of centuries and bringing about equality is a major challenge, which cannot be achieved in a couple of years or decades. It takes a long time and the support of everyone is solicited in achieving this for which MEERA Sansthan craves to say: "Alliance for an Equitable Society"
